Early this spring, I put in a lot of hours and a lot of physical effort to create a wildflower bed in my back yard. I’ve added more stuff to the back yard since, including a bed of milkweed (plus random annuals I couldn’t find room for elsewhere), butterfly bushes, some butterfly-friendly perennials, and a few small tub gardens of water plants, but the focus is still my wildflower bed. It’s U-shaped deliberately so that I can more easily get to bugs to photograph them (butterflies love to get in the middle of a flower bed, as if they know I won’t trample flowers to get to them), and as of today, all the time, money, effort, sweat and getting dirty is worth it. It’s worth it because today, I found the first ever baby manti-dude to live in my yard without having been brought here. It’s a Chinese mantis nymph, and although I don’t know whether it’s a girl or a boy, my husband named it Daniel(le) Boone for being an explorer into the wild, untamed territory of Mean and Pinchy’s Backyard Bug Bistro. Live long and prosper, li’l green manti-dude(tte)! <3
